Samuel’s first offering, Collection 1, was an exploration of western influences on traditional Nigerian dress in history, expressions of masculinity, and the cultural influences of the Harlem Renaissance (specifically examining artists William Henry Johnson, Miles Davis, and the Nicholas Brothers). Collection 1 explores a time in fashion, 1930-40s, which emphasized the importance of discreet elegance. Discreet elegance is defined by the emotional connection to the garment, the wearer finds themselves represented in the garment rather than the garment commanding them. There is a manipulation of form and structure with the use of majority twill fabrics to explore construction techniques such as draping in shirting and pants as well as using twill fabrics lined or unlined in soft tailoring.
